William leaned against the moldering walls of his new bolthole, staring up at the moss-scabbed chandelier. It was just adrenaline that had him shaking. Not weakness, and certainly not fear. Once, a handful of Guardians wouldn’t have been enough to put him to rout, not even with his dark star at their head.
He no longer had any doubts that his best student had the Ravensblood. He’d tasted the lash of that power once before, and the scar lived in his memory as much as it did on his body. Well, well. After he finished laying waste to Raven’s new life, after he killed him slowly and fed on his death, he would have the Ravensblood in his hands. He'd have power enough to cut a wide path of destruction through the Three Communities, even if he no longer had enough followers to take and keep the rule.
When was Eric going to be done playing loving father and come back to heel? He regretted the need to send him to the boy at all, but Adam now had a part to play, and Eric was the best one to teach him his lines. They’d agreed on this place as a rendezvous point should the Portland house be discovered. A white Georgian mansion in the Mariner Gorge near Multnomah Falls, it had once been the height of elegance. Now rain came in through the roof to soak the upper floors, and a family of raccoons had colonized the second floor.
William had been here several times in the days of the mansion’s grandeur; its owner had been one of his father’s followers. He hadn’t expected memories of the rituals in the upstairs rooms to hit him as hard as they had. He shook his head violently to clear them away. He was not that helpless little boy anymore, and everyone else involved was dead, by his hand if not by Guardian hands. He’d sworn, when the last one died, that he would never live in fear again, and yet here he was, scuttling from shadow to shadow like an alley rat.
Raven had done this to him. He’d pay the man back if it took his last breath.
He slid down the wall to settle on the damp wood floor. Somewhere deeper in the house water dripped. It must have rained earlier in the day. It was always raining in this part of the Gorge, even more so than in Portland proper, and it would be cold at night. William shivered.
The house had been condemned when the road that ran along the rise behind the structure had been widened to the point that one could almost reach out and touch the verge from the third-floor balcony. Under ordinary circumstances, the Joint Council might not have been bold enough to seize a property so valuable through eminent domain, but its last occupants had been dark mages slain in the Mage Wars (or so the story went, and no one cared enough to discover that it had been a mage on the same side who had dispatched them.
